The pick of the lot definitely remains Iman Benson as Ilonka and Ruth Codd as Anya. Virtually all the characters have delivered a genuine, credible performance. While the stories per se are great standalone stories and are sort of autobiographical of the narrator, they do not really add much to the core story that is told to us in the beginning. The suspense, the setting, and the horror are all in place, but the primary story, because of these constant hindrances (the stories in between), becomes uneven. While two or three stories might have served well, a whole bunch of stories makes the happenings dull and boring. At the center of the series is Ilonka’s quest to find the truth behind Brightcliffe, but the horror stories the patients tell each other during the midnight club only serve as a deviation. He has succeeded in giving a great premise to the series, and the marriage between the old-world horror and the current generation looks perfect, but it somehow meanders from its defined path in the middle. The series has been executive produced and directed by Mike Flanagan, a respected name in the world of horror.
It is then that she decides to dig deeper and find out the truth about Brightcliffe. At the hospice, Ilonka is also greeted with some strange happenings and spirits. She develops a bond with most of them and also becomes a part of the midnight club – a ritual where the patients tell horror stories to each other. Once at the hospice, she meets similar people who are terminally ill. The series begins with Ilonka, who is all set to move to Ivy League Stanford for higher studies, but a cancer of the thyroid instead pushes her to pack her bag and move to a hospice at Brightcliffe. Based on the work of author Christopher Pike, 'The Midnight Club' tries to pack in most of his stories into one series, and that surely is a stretch. An interesting story that could have been summed up in five episodes has unnecessarily been stretched into ten. The initial episodes keep you engrossed with their horror quotient, but by the time you are way past the fifth episode, it becomes a stretch. REVIEW: Full credit must be given to Mike Flanagan for weaving a horror story that has its setting in a world that we often witnessed in the 80s and the 90s but has millennials at its core. One of the patients, Ilonka, takes it upon herself to dig for the truth behind Brightcliffe. The young patients are residents at the Brightcliffe hospice and are living out their final days, but the hospice at Brightcliffe is not what it seems with its strange ambience. STORY: Set in 1994, ‘The Midnight Club’ is about a group of terminally ill teenagers.
